THE ALEXANDRA SCHOOL OF PERFORMING ARTS was established in October 2000 by the Principal; Alexandra Hughes. ASPA’s aim to is to give it’s students a thorough knowledge of all aspects of the performing arts through technical training and performance experiences.
Here at ASPA, students can attend as many or as few classes as they wish. Take a look at the descriptions below and then check the timetable page to find the perfect class for you!
With four teachers plus trainee teacher assistants in each dance class we can ensure that each student receives a high standard of training with one-to-one help if required. This makes ASPA the perfect choice for beginners as well as those more advanced students.
COMBINATION DANCE 1 Class = All Styles! Choose a combination dance class for all-round training. From the age of just two years old (subject to trial) students are taught the basics in TAP and BALLET. At Junior level MODERN DANCE is introduced and as the students move up through the school they will learn more and more different styles of dance i.e. JAZZ, NATIONAL, POINTE etc. Students who take combination dance are trained towards B.A.T.D examinations and stage performances.
STREET JAZZ ('Street Sensations') Our street jazz class encompasses a lot of individual styles including STREET DANCE and HIP-HOP. This is class is designed for more experienced students who wish to widen their dance capabilities. Students may take street jazz dance from the age of 11 years old but admission to the class depends on individual technical ability.
('Junior Pop') For younger and/or less experienced students, Junior Pop is the perfect accompaniment to a combination dance class. Fun yet challenging, this is the place to let down your hair and strut your funky stuff! all students from Junior level and above welcome.
SINGING ('In Harmony') Singing classes are a necessity for those students who wish to become true ‘all-rounders’. Each class begins with a vocal warm-up; breathing techniques, scales, pitch exercises and vocal strengthening. This is followed by the learning of various styles of songs from Lloyd Webber to Gershwin, Sondheim to G&S. The class is designed to teach the techniques of singing and also (and very importantly) the technique of performance. Students may take singing from the age of 7 years old, although younger children may be accepted after a short trial. Singing students are trained towards in-house ASPA Awards and stage performances.
STARLITE DANCE Created specifically for the youngest of dancers, the Starlite class is the very best start you can give your child into the wonderful world of dance. Children are taught basic tap and ballet steps through special fun exercises that develop confidence and imagination alongside proper dance technique. Students from the Starlite class are encouraged to take part in ASPA shows and events as soon as possible and are entered for a unique ASPA Baby Dance Exam before they are old enough to take a B.A.T.D Exam.
